Baylifft Gym & Box: The Gym That Feels Like Family

If awards were given for friendliest gym, Baylifft Gym and Box would win the prize. Friendly smiles and welcoming faces greet class attendees at the door and the camaraderie feels like family. As a first-timer attending Baylifft’s high intensity interval class known as TRAIN, I was helped and encouraged by coaches and members alike. With a variety of classes and challenging workouts, it’s easy to see why Baylifft Gym and Box is growing rapidly.

About Baylifft Gym & Box

Mandie Bayliff and her husband, Joe, opened Baylifft Gym and Box, located in Dunkirk, in 2015. “Our goal was to give those who didn’t belong to a gym a home and a place to grow as an athlete,” explains Bayliff. This meant keeping classes short and providing plenty of instruction. The gym offers nearly 40 fitness classes each week and all members receive personal training and meal planning advice.

Bayliff references the theme song from Cheers to describe the atmosphere they strive for as a gym. “You want to go where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came. We aim to do that every time. We want to know your name and greet you with smiling faces when you come through the door,” she says.

The workout

During the forty-minute TRAIN class, we did several intense weight-training exercises with as many reps as possible within a set time limit. Similar to a CrossFit-type class, the workout of the day (WOD) is written on the wall for all to see. Moves included burpees and using a weighted bar to do overhead presses and upright rows. Another move was “wall balls,” or throwing and catching a medicine ball punctuated by a deep squat before repeating.

As someone who lacks upper body strength, my arms were tired and shaking within the first ten minutes. The squats with the wall ball kicked my legs into gear. It felt good to challenge myself, and I encourage others to give it a try. Baylifft Gym and Box is a friendly and welcoming place, and your first class is free!
