If you want to step back in time without stepping out of Findlay, go old school by going to Steak ‘n Shake. Not only do you get a tasty meal, you get a taste of an old-fashioned diner.

Milkshakes any time

Located locally at 1700 Broad Ave., the chain began in 1934 boasting premium burgers made from steak and milkshakes. You can pretty much have
what you want when you want it. A hand-dipped milkshake at midnight? No problem. The dining room is open Monday through Thursday from 7-1am.
Fridays the dining room is open beginning at 7am and continues until Sunday at 1am.

Diner style dinner

We arrived one Friday afternoon for an early dinner and were pleasantly greeted by the diner décor in red, white and black, with touches of chrome. Regular
drinks were served in old-fashioned Coca-Cola glasses (but kid drinks are still served in plastic). That started a spirited discussion of drive-in diners, car hops and soda jerks. Was the lesson lost on the children? Probably. But it was still fun!

My children were offered a children’s menu packet that included a cardboard car to put together and a paper hat that even my 10 year old thought was cool.
Upon perusing the children’s menu, which included classics like burgers, mini corn dogs and chicken fingers, she weighed in with the ultimate compliment
from a fairly fussy tween.

“I like this place already,” she said. “It has all my favorite stuff.”

Family choices

After much thought, she ordered the hot dog with fries ($2.79). Her younger sister, a more adventurous epicurean, ordered steakburger minis with fries
($2.79). Dad ordered a double cheeseburger ($3.99). As usual I, a vegetarian, had to search a little longer. But even in
a place that prides itself on steakburgers, I found a yummy dinner: The Southwest Grilled Chicken Salad, with the chicken on the
side ($6.49).

We also ordered a round of milkshakes and stumbled on a bargain: a milkshake happy hour! From 2-4pm and 2-4am (when open) all shakes and drinks are
half price. With that, our bill was also happy.
Food and drinks for four, including two desserts and an appetizer to share, was less than $35. Other restaurant specials include a free kid’s meal, excluding drinks and shakes, for every $8 spent on the weekends.

A taste of Americana

We all agreed that the food was good, and the atmosphere fun. It’s a nice change of pace from fast-food burgers. Here, you can sit and have your burgers, fries and a shake with a touch of 50s flavor. We left our little taste of Americana with a happy wallet and happy tummies.
